Co-Curricular Programs

Fashion Show – since 2001

The Annual Fashion Show takes place at the end of term 2. During this event, students in Technology (Mandatory), Textiles Technology, Textiles and Design and in some cases various other subjects, showcase their textile items. There are 2 shows; the first is in the afternoon for the entire college and the second is in the evening primarily for the community.

The show develops strong links with local businesses and industry representatives. A panel of judges selects the most outstanding items in each category and these are announced at the conclusion of the evening show.

The Fashion Show also attracts many sponsors who are acknowledged in a highly creative and innovative multi-media presentation. The show includes professional catwalks, lights and a cameraman.

Primary Fashion Workshops – since 2012

RSC fashion workshops are offered to local primary students twice during term two. These are highly successful workshops organised by year 11 Textiles and Design students. Primary students are provided with a basic design brief and at the end of the workshop they produce a simple textile wearable item. The students then showcase their items at the fashion show. Students design and make basic textile items which are embellished using various techniques.

The Budding Chef

This is a new TAS faculty initiative. This program provides an opportunity to local primary students to take part in a cooking workshop. Students observe demonstrations by RSC hospitality students and then prepare basic recipes such as biscuits, muffins, cupcakes which are then packaged in creative ways. Students gain practical skills in basic cookery in a commercial kitchen.

Creative Stiches Club

This program was established primarily for stage 4 students. It runs once a week during lunch time for students who have an interest in interior design. Students will be given the opportunity to design and make soft furnishing items using a range of material. The projects are focused on sustainability and innovation.

The purpose of this program is to engage gifted and talented TAS students in designing a range of products in any Technology; IST, Timber, Engineering, Textiles, Food, Electronics, Design and Technology, Construction and Graphics. The aim is to promote DESIGN at RSC as well as the local community. The focus will be working with tertiary institutions such as Macquarie University, Ryde TAFE and local businesses.

Languages

Ryde Secondary College offers three languages. Indonesian and French are offered in the Junior school. Japanese Beginners is offered in the Senior school as well as French and Indonesian Continuers.

Students begin the study of languages in Year 7 at the college with the compulsory, study of Indonesian and French. In Year 8 students choose one of these languages and are then able to choose to continue LOTE courses as electives in Years 9 and 10. Students with a particular interest in languages are able to select more than one language elective should they wish in Years 9 and 10. All three languages are offered as electives in the Senior School.

The focus of our programs is to enable students to communicate in the languages they are studying and to have an understanding and appreciation of the cultures associated with these languages. The courses for each of the languages incorporate the essential communication skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. The cultural aspects are integrated throughout each unit of work. Using technology to enhance and enrich the learning experience is an important aspect of our approach. We aim to ensure that learning languages is a successful, rewarding and enjoyable experience for our students.

Discovering and exploring a new culture and communicating with people in another language are always wonderful experiences. At Ryde Secondary College we work towards building these cultural bridges and developing communication skills with a wide range of activities added to the curriculum.

The students’ language learning is enriched by a range of cultural experiences, for example, restaurant excursions, viewing foreign films, cultural incursions and reading magazines and learning songs in the target language.

Drama

Drama students learn to collaborate and develop skills in communication. Drama teaches students to use their imagination, think creatively and critically and allows them to develop confidence. Students work on a variety of different approaches to theatre performance. These include: physical theatre, characterisation, commedia dell’arte, absurdism, improvisation, political theatre and Australian theatre.

At Ryde Secondary College, Year 8 students are given the opportunity to experience Drama through collaboration with the English faculty. Students spend one lesson a cycle studying Drama in tandem with their English course.

Ryde Secondary College offers Drama as an elective in year 9-10 and as a HSC subject. Former students have successfully applied to attend tertiary dramatic art and film schools, with one student premiering her own production in 2012 at the Sydney Fringe Festival.

Ryde Secondary College has a drama studio as a teaching space. HSC performances are presented in the studio each year as part of Performance Night. Building and planning is underway to improve the space and to modernise the sound and lighting system in the MPC to allow for large productions.
